Howey Mine Discovery


On July 25, 1925, under the roots of an upturned tree, Ray Howey, George McNeely, and Lorne Howey (prospectors from Cobalt) discovered a major gold vein on the shores of Red Lake, triggering the last great gold rush in North America.


The Red Lake Regional Heritage Centre is a charitable organization, funded by the Municipality of Red Lake and the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Recreation.   Reg # 87315 2714 RR001
