The Archives

The Heritage Centre holds more then 30,000 historic documents, journals, newspapers and photographs about the history of Red Lake and the surrounding areas. Documents and videos must be viewed at the Centre. No materials may leave the Archives. The Heritage Centre reserves the right to deny a researcher certain materials if the Centre considers them too sensitive to be handled. If this is the case, special arrangements will be made.

Access

Access to the museum's research resources is during regular business hours.

Appointments/Fee

Researchers are asked to call to book an appointment at least 24 hours ahead. This will enable staff time to gather the requested materials. If a research request is made by phone, email or in person, an initial fee of $15.00 must be paid prior to the start of the research. An additional $10.00 is to be paid each hour the researcher spends in the Archives. The Heritage Centre reserves the right to waive the research fee for special projects.

Photocopying Service

Archival material may not leave the Centre. A photocopier is available to researchers. There is a charge of 25 cents per copy (includes letter and legal sizes) $1.00 per copy for 11x17 sheets. Please note: In the interest of preservation, the Heritage Centre reserves the right to restrict or deny the photocopying or scanning of rare and fragile material.

Photo Reproduction Charges

The charge for photo reproductions/other services are as follows:
There will be a $5.00 per photo handling charge for photos not already digitalized
8.5 x 11 sheet of photo paper $10.00
11 x 17 sheet of photo paper $15.00
Scanning a photo to a CD  you provide $5.00
Scanning a photo and saving it to CD we provide $10.00

Photo Conditions

  1. The Red Lake Regional Heritage Centre reserves the right to determine which photograph may be reproduced.
  2. Photographs are provided for one-time use only, unless otherwise stated.
  3. The sale of photographs does not automatically include permission for their reproduction. Permission for reproductions must be obtained and will be granted if the proposed use of the photograph meets with the approval of the museum.
  4. Photographs may be ordered for research purposes and then released for publication by letter after payment of a publican fee.
  5. Permission to publish or further reproduce material is granted for a specific purpose or occasion and does not transfer the copyright of the original material to the requester.
  6. Photographs from the Red Lake Regional Heritage Centre must be credited to the museum and should credit the original photographer when known.
  7. The author/publisher of any publication containing an illustration from the Red Lake Regional Heritage Centre shall provide one complimentary copy to the museum.
  8. Researchers are not allowed to copy photographs using their own cameras or other equipment.
  9. Photographs shall not be copied or incorporated in the collections of any archives, library, or other repository without the written permission of the Red Lake Regional Heritage Centre
  10. Photographs shall not be retouched or altered in any way which would affect their historical or artistic integrity.
