Introduction to Museums

Kindergarten:

Self-awareness and self-reliance
#6. talk about events or retell stories that reflect their own heritage and cultural background and the heritage and cultural backgrounds of others (e.g., traditions, birthdays, cultural events, myths, Canadian symbols, holidays)
#12. adapt to new situations (e.g., having visitors in the classroom, having a different teacher occasionally, going on a field trip, riding the school bus).

Grade 1:

Social Studies: Canada and World Connections: The Local Community


Inquiry/Research and Communication Skills

The students will:


- Brainstorm and ask questions (e.g. Who? What? Where? When?) to gain information about their local community.

Grade 2:

Social Studies:  Heritage and Culture:  Traditions and Celebrations

Knowledge and Understanding:
 
Students will:
- demonstrate an understanding that communities may be made up of people from many cultures;
– outline traditions of various cultures that are passed down from earlier generations
– identify ways in which heritage and traditions are passed on
 
Grade 3: 

Social Studies:  Heritage and Culture:  Early Settlements in Upper Canada
 
While this unit focuses specifically on settlements in Upper Canada around the 1800s, and Red Lake was settled at a much later date, the museum tour can supplement discussions of what the early settlers in Upper Canada learned from the First Nation peoples.  The Heritage Centre contains examples of different aspects of aboriginal culture in the Red Lake District that would be pertinent to the curriculum expectations that focus on understanding First Nation culture prior to European settlement.
